The two ways to miss
The average is short. The band starts at 90 and the learner averages 89.
One grade is under the floor. The average is inside the band, but the learner's lowest grade is below what NO GRADE BELOW asks for. Under the DO 015 preset that is 80 (¶75), so 93 overall with a 78 in one learning area is not an award.
Just outside this band
Under each tier, a panel names the learners who came close and says which of the two it was:
Ilagan, Trisha Mae averages 93, but 78 in Science is under the 80 this band asks for.
Jimenez, Carl Andrei averages 89, one point below.
The rules behind it:
- Only learners within 2 points below a band's bottom are named as short.
- A learner held back by the floor is named under the band their average lands in, however far under the floor they fell.
- At most six names to a band, closest first.
- A learner who earned a tier is never listed as a near miss, and each near miss is attached to the one band they came closest to — so no name appears twice on the page.
What to do with it
The panel names the learning area holding the learner back. Open that subject's class record and check the term: a blank cell that should have been a zero, or a zero that should have been excused, moves a grade more than anything else. Explain this grade on the term grade shows every number behind it.
Nothing on this panel changes an award. The bands and the floor belong to the policy; a learner only moves if the grades move.
The panel is on screen only. It is left off when you print the honour roll.
